Besides tracking developments during the current legislative session, HBL also networks with individuals and organizations locally, regionally, and nationally to grow a movement for safer streets for all. If you would like to get involved and be a part of this work, please read on or email Advocacy Director Eduardo Hernandez

We’re especially looking for people who can use their voice to amplify a message of gratitude for infrastructure and policy projects that you use or will use. It is crucial for elected officials and policy makers to hear from constituents and know that things like sidewalk improvements and bike lane expansions really are making a difference.

O‘ahu:

Neighbor Islands

  • Maui Bicycling League – An official chapter organization of HBL with opportunities to get involved in advocacy, education and events.
  • Kaua‘i PATH – Their visionary advocacy has helped to create the nationally recognized Ke Ala Hele Makalae coastal trail.
  • PATH – People for Active Transportation Hawai‘i – Their programs include biking and pedestrian safety, HIBIKE Bikeshare, and Vision Zero and Complete Streets Advocacy.

USA/International:

  • The League of American Bicyclists – Founded in 1880, this national organization with more than 200,000 individual members and more than 1,000 state and local advocacy groups leads national efforts for safer walking, biking, and rolling. From March 4-26, HBL is leading a delegation to attend the National Bike Summit including a day of meetings with Congressional delegates on Capitol Hill.
  • Rails To Trails Conservancy – Since 1986, RTC has worked to bring the power of trails to more communities across the country, serving as the national voice for the rail-trail movement.

Together, these organizations are partnering to address real threats to walking and biking infrastructure across the nation, including projects in Hawai‘i funded by the US DOT. On February 2, they will be launching a national campaign to Keep America Active that highlights the need to work with Congress to ensure that transportation funding continues, especially for walking and biking infrastructure.

  • World Bicycle Day – In 2025, HBL invited Governor Josh Green to proclaim Hawai‘i the first state in the nation to observe this global event celebrating the bicycle.
