Teaching bike safety to 4th graders since 1989.
Hawai‘i Bicycling League (HBL) leads BikeEd Hawai‘i, a comprehensive school-based cycling education program designed to promote safe cycling habits among children. The program emphasizes the benefits of cycling for health, recreation, and transportation. Targeted primarily at 4th-grade students on O‘ahu, the five-day curriculum combines classroom instruction with hands-on bicycle training. Pre- and post-program quizzes are administered to measure student knowledge and skill improvement. Since its inception, BikeEd has reached over 250,000 students statewide, making it a cornerstone of youth cycling education in Hawai‘i.
BikeEd is a five-day program consisting of both classroom instruction and practical, on-bike training. Students learn about bicycle maintenance through the “A-B-C Quick Check,” develop basic cycling skills during two days of on-bike lessons, and finish the program with an off-campus ride to apply their new skills in real-world conditions. The program is delivered by a dedicated team of seven staff members, utilizing two trucks equipped with 60 bikes. HBL’s partnership with the City and County of Honolulu and its extensive relationships with schools have been essential to the program’s longevity and success.
BikeEd Hawai‘i is funded by the City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services.

Our program is designed to be completed in five days and we can accommodate your school’s rotating schedule if necessary. The program runs from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (not including school holidays).
The instructors will go over rules, expectations, visibility, why it’s important to wear a helmet, proper helmet fitting, the anatomy of a bicycle, and what the BikeEd week will be like everyday: SAFE & FUN
Tuesday & Wednesday On-campus Workshop:6-point safety check, how to ride a bicycle, bicycle handling and control drills, and proper stopping
Thursday & Friday Off-Campus Workshop:BikeEd Instructors lead students who can ride safely on a neighborhood ride. Those still practicing can stay on campus to continue practicing. On the off campus ride, instructors cover safe driveway exits, left turns, right turns, and u-turns
BikeEd can accommodate up to 180 students per school week, with a minimum of 10 students in a class. Bicycle education is delivered by two awesome HBL BikeEd teams who bring the following to the school:

BikeEd Hawai‘i began in 1985 at a local charter school in Honolulu and was adopted by HBL in 1989. Throughout the 1990s, the program expanded rapidly, reaching dozens of schools across the state. By the early 2000s, BikeEd was operational in over 100 schools, serving thousands of students each year. Today, the program educates approximately 7,100 students annually, with 104 elementary schools participating during the 2025-2026 school year alone.
Hawaii’s BikeEd program stands out due to its longevity and extensive reach. Since its inception in 1985, the program has been a staple in Hawai’i schools, educating over 100,000 students. This long-term commitment to bicycle education has established BikeEd as a legacy program, deeply embedded in the community’s efforts to promote safe cycling practices among its youth. BikeEd students have gone on to become State Legislators, City Council members, and even the City’s Safe Routes to School manager.
Additionally, the program’s comprehensive curriculum further distinguishes it. Spanning five days, BikeEd Hawai’i combines classroom learning with practical, hands-on bicycle training. The curriculum is designed to ensure students not only understand the theoretical aspects of safe cycling but also gain real-world skills through guided practice. This approach culminates in an off-campus ride, allowing students to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. The result is a significant improvement in students’ understanding and proficiency, as evidenced by quiz scores rising post-program.
This comprehensive, well-supported, and highly impactful program serves as a model for other regions aiming to implement effective school-based bicycle education initiatives.
More important than anything, it teaches that safe biking can be fun biking!
Founded in 1989, the program has taught bike education to over 100,000 4th grade students! Program expenses continue to rise, while the primary grant funding does not. Please consider donating below to help reach our goal of $70,000. These funds will help bridge a gap between grant funding and program expenses, help acquire a new box truck, and support other supplies and tools. Through business and individual support we look forward to 35 more years of youth bicycling education! Mahalo for supporting this program and our mission to enable more people to ride bicycles!
