HBL Members and supporters joined dozens of community members, elected officials and policymakers on August 18th, to hear the Makiki Safer Streets Community Workshop presented by the Department of Transportation. There is also a map highlighting the crash sites that were documented between 2015-2022.
The City is continuing to receive feedback, not only for this specific project but for related planned projects in key corridors, including South King Street, Beretania Street, Young Street, Kapi‘olani Boulevard, Pi‘ikoi, and Kaheka Street. You can send your comments via email.

Honolulu Complete Streets is looking for community input on how we can make some of Makiki’s most important streets safer—and we’d love for HBL members and supporters to be part of the conversation.
Join us for the Makiki Safer Streets Community Workshop on Tuesday, August 18 at 6:30pm.
The workshop is part of the City’s Honolulu Safer Streets Initiative, which is developing traffic safety improvements for seven of Oʻahu’s highest-crash corridors. This first workshop will focus specifically on:
- Wilder Avenue from Pensacola Street to Punahou Street
- Piʻikoi Street from Lunalilo Street to Pensacola Street
The City is considering a range of potential improvements, including safer crossings, bicycle facilities, bus stop amenities, lane reconfigurations, traffic signal changes, and new roadway striping and signage. Upcoming paving projects also create an opportunity to make some safety improvements in the near term.

Whether you live in or regularly bike through Makiki, walk these streets, take the bus, or simply want to see safer transportation options for everyone, we encourage you to attend, ask questions, and provide feedback on the proposed designs.

The evening will begin with an overview of the project and conceptual improvement plans, followed by a breakout session where community members can review the designs, ask questions, and share their ideas.
