HBL Board of Directors Election 2024

- Candidate Write Ups -

Once a year, a portion of the members of your Hawai‘i Bicycling League Board of Directors are elected. As with recent HBL elections, this is taking place by email/electronic ballot. Results will be announced by email in December.

HBL’s Board of Directors are HBL member volunteers who serve two-year terms to guide and serve our organization. The Board approves HBL policies, budget, and supervises the Executive Director.

Aloha, fellow cyclists and supporters of the Hawaii Bicycling League!

My name is Bob Bengtson and I am running for re-election to the HBL Board of Directors. I have been a proud member of HBL since 1998 and a board member since 2003. In my time on the board, I have served as President of the Board and contributed to HBL’s mission of enabling more people to ride bicycles for health, recreation, and transportation through advocacy, education, and events.

As a board member, I have witnessed the positive impact that HBL has on our community, from teaching bike safety to thousands of keiki, to advocating for more and safer bike facilities, to hosting fun and inclusive rides for all ages and abilities.

If re-elected, I will continue to work hard to support HBL’s vision of a Hawaii where everyone can enjoy the benefits of bicycling. Some of the goals I have for the next term are:

      • Increase bike infrastructure including more protected bike lanes,
      • Complete the development of our new strategic plan,
      • Increase donations to support our education and advocacy programs

I believe that HBL is a vital organization for our community, and I am honored to be a part of it. I humbly ask for your vote to continue serving on the Board of Directors. Together, we can make Hawaii a better place to bike and walk. Mahalo for your support!

Aloha, Bob Bengtson

I love biking! So much so that I’ve biked the 600-mile perimeter of Taiwan, conquered the 34-mile Taiwan KOM and Cycle to the Sun. When Biki came to Hawaii, I helped them build awareness by biking the entire 2018 Honolulu Century Ride on a Biki! Friends still call me the Biki Girl or sometimes Ina Biki Chang. In 2020, I was instrumental in organizing HBL’s #SafeUs Bike Team. We rode as a 10-person team to raise awareness of the 3-Feet Safe Passing Law as part of a Rally on the Capitol. I am the President of Aloha Data, the mother of 3 wonderful children, sit on numerous boards, fluent in Chinese, and an expert in Chinese calligraphy.

Why I would like to join the HBL Board: I would like to bring my passion for bicycling and energy to the Hawaii Bicycling League to help it grow its impact on the community and enable more women to bike.

Interest in cycling and HBL: As a student at the University of Hawaii way back in the 70’s, I commuted to school by bicycle on my trusty Schwinn 10 speed. Decades later I climbed back on a bicycle to train for triathlons and met the wonderful Eve DeCoursey a former Executive Director of HBL. Her passion was to make bicycling doable for everyone. Her dedication and patience encouraged me to co-found the Red Hot Ladies, a ride group for women 50+, help establish bicycling awareness on the UH Manoa campus and become a long time member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Bicycling.

Goals as a HBL Board Member: My goals as a board member of HBL is to make bicycling a safe commuter alternative through advocacy and education. The roadways should be able to accommodate those who are recreational cyclist as well as those who see cycling as another mode of transportation.

Interest in cycling and HBL: Mountain Bike/ BMX / Electric Bikes

Goals as a HBL Board Member: As a returning member of the board, my main goal is to advocate for the off-road cycling community (mountain bike, BMX, Electric Bikes).  Ultimately, the goal is to unify the cycling community and create a stronger voice no matter discipline.  Furthermore, to get more people riding bicycles for health, recreation and transportation by making Hawaii’s streets, PATHWAYS, PARKS, AND TRAIL ACCESS easier and safer.
