As 2024 comes to a close we reflect on a year of progress, community building, and shared victories. Thanks to your generous support, Hawai’i Bicycling League has made incredible strides in advancing safer, more affordable, and more accessible bicycling across Hawai’i. Together we’ve expanded opportunities for all ages and abilities to experience the joy of bicycling.
2024 Highlights: Building Momentum for Sustainable Transportation & Safe Streets
Advocacy:
» Championed Safe Streets for All through policy, legislation, and action
» Represented Hawai’i on the national stage at the National Bike Summit in Washington, D.C.
» Supported the implementation of the Safe Routes to School law; unlocking $10M in funding
» Helped lead the City’s E-Mobility Task Force and recommend statutory updates
» Celebrated Complete Streets projects in Kaka‘ako and workshops in Kailua and Kāhala
» Supported the adoption of the Honolulu Vision Zero Master Plan
» Held post-crash solutions meetings with Honolulu Mayor, HDOT, HPD, and the Lt. Governor’s staff
Education:
» Served 8,000 youth through our in-school on-bicycle BikeEd Hawai‘i program
» Taught 100+ cycling workshops and hosted 50+ educational events, reaching over 2,700 community members
» Distributed over 600+ helmets through schools and community helmet giveaways across the island
» Created and produced e-bike PSAs and workshops through a new partnership with the Hawai’i Department of Transportation
» Developed bike safety curriculum and training for Driver’s Ed instructors across the state
Events:
» Welcomed over 2,500 riders from 18 U.S. states and 7 countries to our large events, including over 300 first-time riders, who collectively rode over 150,000 miles – equivalent to 6 laps around the world
» Celebrated Bike Month with energizer stations, helmet giveaway, cycle swap meet, and pau hana
» Partnered with REHAB Hospital, VA Pacific Islands Healthcare System, and Adaptive Adventures on a quarterly adaptive ride series to make cycling more inclusive for all riders
Community:
» Picked up over 3,000 lbs of trash at various community clean-up events
» Donated 100+ bikes to KVIBE and other local organizations
» Replaced 200+ delineators and helped clean Honolulu’s protected bike lanes
» Created a new chapter, HBL Dirt, to focus on improving off-road bicycling opportunities
» Celebrated the groundbreaking Navahine+HDOT outcome, the first constitutional climate settlement of its kind in the world

Over five decades, we’ve grown from a small group of passionate advocates to a vibrant, statewide community dedicated to transforming Hawai’i’s streets, paths, and trails. This milestone is more than a celebration; it’s a call to action to carry forward our mission with renewed energy
