League of American Bicyclists Coach Workshop

Houston, TX

Location: 7901 El Rio St, Houston, TX 77054 Harris County Precinct One

In October 2025, the League of American Bicyclists hosted it’s annual Coach workshop in Houston, Texas. League Cycling Coaches are approved and hired as independent contractors of the League of American Bicyclists. Coaches are expert instructors and educators of bicycle safety education who lead League Cycling Instructor (LCI) certification seminars and certify new LCIs. In total, there are 18 Coaches across the nation, and I am honoured to be one of them.

While some Coaches who weren’t able to make the trip participated remotely, it was awesome to connect with many in-person. In attendance we had representation reaching across the US – Alison from Maryland, Jim from San Diego, Les from New Orleans, Shane from Oregon, Eugene from Florida, Rich from New York, Diva from Ohio, Neil from Pittsburgh, Jan from Minnesota, Leta from North Carolina, and Coach-in-Training Michael from Wisconsin. Big shout out to Regina, Vanessa, and Fernando (from Houston) who helped coordinate all the venue details and meet-ups!

We addressed qualifications to becoming certified instructors, working to address the lengthy 70-question pre-assessment exam, and discussed challenges and solutions to leading a rigorous 23-hour training curriculum. In addition to lots of discussion and lively conversation in our chairs, it was great to get out on bike and check out the bicycle infrastructure around the Houston Precinct One area. We even “ran into” Commissioner Rodney Ellis out on our bike ride!
