Electric assist bikes or e-bikes are similar to traditional bikes but are equipped with a low speed electric motor that can help a rider:

Electric bicycles are helping breakdown the most common barriers to bicycling (“it’s too far/difficult/scary/hot/hilly…”) and giving more people access to the awesome world of bicycling– which is great! Curious to try one for yourself?! Come out to a free E-Bikes 101 Workshop brought to you by Hawai‘i Bicycling League and get the chance to test ride an e-bike for yourself (and much more!).

This 2-hour interactive workshop is made free to the public through a grant from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation and will go over the most essential e-bike topics: what Hawai‘i’s laws say about e-bikes, introduction & rundown of e-bike lingo, what sets them apart from traditional bicycles, pros & cons on different component options, and best practices for safe e-biking in Hawai‘i! These workshops are designed to get responsible teens & adults into the awesome world of electric bicycles safely & confidently with Hawai‘i’s bicycling-experts.

There is no fee to participate in this workshop. Registrants will get to choose from a wide array of different styles of e-bikes provided by HBL, or opt to bring their personal e-bike. 

Signing up for a class gets you an e-bike to try out for the workshop! Sign-ups are on a first-come, first-served basis. SPACE IS LIMITED. Secure your spot today!

Workshop registration will close when class capacity has been reached or 24-hours before the start of the workshop.

Those under 15 years of age are allowed to attend the workshops to learn but will not be permitted to operate any e-bike during the workshop.

This talk on e-bikes is presented by Hawai‘i Bicycling League and will be covering all the essentials that folks need to know about electric bicycles– defining what an e-bike is, discussing why Hawai‘i is seeing a rise in ridership, what rules riders & drivers need to know about, and other essential safety tips to keep all road users safe.

Honolulu City Councilmember Augie Tulba is hosting a (District 9) community roundtable in Waipahu talking about e-bike safety and discussing solutions to reduce speeding.

The event will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at August Ahrens Elementary School and is free and open to the public. Join in on a discussion about e-bikes and public safety, with speakers from the City & County of Honolulu Department of Transportation Services, Hawai‘i Bicycling League, and the Honolulu Police Department.

Hawai‘i State E-Bike Laws

  • Minimum Age: Age minimum for e-bike riders is 15 years old.
  • Helmet Requirement: A properly fastened helmet is required when bicycling for riders under 16 years of age.
  • License and Registration: Registration is required for those operating an e-bike on public roadways ($30 one-time fee for e-bikes). Driver’s license and insurance is not required.
  • Speed Limit: E-bikes may not exceed 20 mph when being powered by the electric motor. Note: the motor will cease providing assistance at it’s “top assisted speed”, but the rider can keep pedaling faster to make the e-bike go faster.
  • Where Allowed: E-bikes are allowed on any roadway, lane, or path that traditional bicycles are allowed on, including shared-use paths.
