Dole Street Complete Streets

The City & County of Honolulu’s Dole Street Complete Streets Project in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa area is finished and ready to ride! We appreciate everyone who came out to provide support & comments in-person at the University/McCully/Metcalf Complete Streets open community meetings or shared their input digitally.

There have been improvements made in the form of upgraded bike lanes, new buffered bike lanes, and a 4-to-3 lane reconfiguration which will help to make this vulnerable user-heavy street safer by slowing speeding drivers and giving bicycle riders their own dedicated space.

Some things to keep in mind when using these bike facilities:

Beware the “Door Zone”! We recommend riding with at least a doors length (3-5ft) of distance between you and parked cars in case someone flings their door open without checking for traffic. In the instance above, we’d feel more comfortable biking in far-left part of the bike lane, and keeping an eye out for any motion or signs of occupants in the cars.

Parts of the bike lane have dashed striping. Bicyclists should take note of where the line is broken as this indicates major driveways where other vehicles might be crossing through the bike lane.
