Come ride with hundreds of other bicyclists during this epic ride along O‘ahu’s beautiful North Shore.
You’ll start at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park, riding across the start line at 7:30am. You’ll first bike towards Ka‘ena Point with the ocean on your right and Dillingham Airfield on your left. Take a little break at Camp Erdman where you turn around and bike back towards Hale‘iwa. Then, pedal past famed ocean beaches and surf spots like Sharks Cove, Waimea Bay, Pipeline, and Sunset. When you reach Hau‘ula Beach State Park, it will be time for you to return along the beautiful coastline, over Hale‘iwa’s iconic Rainbow Bridge, and finish up back where you started! You’ll find plenty of Aid Stations along your ride to keep you energized and hydrated. Plus, a marked course, roving mechanics, and course marshals. You’ll finish proud and exhilarated when you arrive at Kaiaka Bay Beach Park to celebrate your achievement and enjoy camaraderie with your fellow bicyclists.
Most folks don’t bike the North Shore very often, but thousands have joined HBL for this ride over the past 30 years. Bike the entire 100K route (a Metric Century is 62 miles), or turn around at any of 5 Aid Stations. Ride your ride with HBL and take pride in knowing you’re supporting the Hawaii Bicycling League when you do!
Plus, as a little more incentive, this dry-fit t-shirt is included at no extra charge in your registration fee!
Kaiaka Bay Beach park is located between Waialua and Hale‘iwa, about a one-hour drive from Honolulu. The first leg is an out-and-back on Farrington Highway, with a turnaround at Camp Erdman. Once back in Hale‘iwa, bicyclists take the Hale‘iwa bypass and pedal along Kamehameha Highway along the coast. The furthest Aid Station at Hau‘ula Beach Park is the 100K turnaround. When you’re nearly back to the Start/Finish, you’ll bike over the iconic Rainbow Bridge.
This is a ride and not a race, and all roads will remain open to vehicular traffic. Follow all rules of the road and ride alert, predictably, and with aloha. The road is mostly flat with a few moderate hills. Roads are not super smooth, but quite rideable. There are a few areas where the pavement is broken, but again quite rideable. We suggest running a slightly lower psi in your tires to improve comfort. Ride at your own pace. All skill levels and ages are welcome (minors under age 18 require parent consent), just make sure to bring your helmet (as we cannot allow you to participate in the ride without one!).
The mass start is at 7:30 am. You can choose to be in this large group start, or wait a few minutes if that’s more comfortable for you. This is your ride. You must be off the course by 2:00pm when it closes. Ride support and Aid Stations have staggered opening times based upon a 7:30am start. If you arrive at an Aid Station and it’s determined you cannot return by 2pm to the Start/Finish by continuing on, you will be asked to turn around.

The last time we were able to hold this event for the community was 2019 and that has impacted our financial well being. All proceeds benefit the non-profit Hawaii Bicycling League’s mission to enable more people to bike for transportation, recreation and health. Our advocacy efforts and education programs depend upon events like this.
We will follow all State of Hawaii and City & County of Honolulu requirements for large OUTDOOR events in effect on April 24, 2022. We will communicate those before the event day. We encourage everyone to participate with the preventative measures (masks, social distancing, etc.) they prefer. We have secured all permits and absolutely expect to hold this event on April 24, 2022. In the unlikely situation the event is disallowed, it will be converted to a virtual event. No refunds will be provided since all expenses will have been incurred.
This Ride is Possible Because of our Volunteers! ♥ Almost everyone who will be supporting you during the Hale‘iwa Metric Century are volunteers. Please thank them and show them your aloha!
Positions will be needed for packet pickup, aid station crews, truck loading and unloading, truck drivers, equipment delivery and pickup, setup and breakdown, rider support and more! See the details on the various volunteer position descriptions here.
Have a group, or looking to take on a leadership role? Email: Events@HBL.org
Volunteers will receive an HBL volunteer t-shirt. Food and drinks will be provided for most volunteer shifts.

The event is not only a community ride that celebrates cycling as a fun & healthy activity and brings more awareness to bicycling safety, but ultimately is a fundraising event for HBL. Expenses are incurred before the ride takes place. For that reason, no deferrals or refunds will be processed.
Permits have been secured and all looks very good to go. In the unlikely event that the ride is disallowed due to Covid restrictions, the event will convert to a virtual ride.
Know your limits and pace yourself. The entire course is 62 miles (100K) and there is typically a headwind on the way to Hau‘ula. If you tire, there is no shame in biking a shorter distance than you planned. If it is determined you will not make the course cut-off time of 2pm, you will be asked to turn around and return to the Start/Finish. We advise some biking beforehand to get ready. Join some friends and work up your mileage weekly. You do not need to bike 62 miles all in one day before the ride, but you should build your strength and experience and endurance to fully enjoy the day!
Looking to find a carpool buddy? A great way would be to join the 2022 Hale‘iwa Metric Century Facebook group that HBL created for you! Registered riders, those not registered (yet!), and supporters/family/friends of those riding can share goals, tips, plans, photos, motivation, arrange carpool opportunities, and more!
Other items that might be handy to have include camera, phone, (with plastic bag for protection from possible moisture) and snacks.
Ride with Aloha: Please follow all traffic laws, signs, and signals, plus any requests from the HPD special duty officers on course. Please ride single file (this is law in Hawai‘i) and to the right of the lane. In many situations the shoulder has sand or gravel. Please signal to the riders/drivers behind you when merging into the travel lane. Hawaii HRS291C-145 allows a cyclist to control the whole lane when it’s too narrow for a car and a bike to share the lane as well as to avoid hazards. For more info on the laws, please visit our Bike Laws page. Please report aggressive / dangerous drivers to HPD by calling 911.
Pass with Care: When passing a rider, please make sure it is clear to do so, then pass on the left. Be sure to signal visually (for riders and drivers behind) and vocally, “passing on your left” for rider ahead.
Bringing your bike to the start line in good working order is really important. It would be a shame to get there and not be able to ride because your bike isn’t working or is unsafe. Perhaps worse would be experiencing a mechanical issue that causes you to end your ride early. If you’re not positive your bike is in top shape, take it to your friendly local bike store for a quick tune-up.
Local bike stores and partners BIKEFACTORY, Boca Hawaii, Chillaxin’ Hawaii, T. Eki, Inc. (formerly Eki Cyclery), and The Bike Shop, will be volunteering their time to provide mechanical support at the designated Aid Stations. In addition, there will be mechanical support roving along the course for riders in need.
