On May 14, 2024, a person cycling eastbound in the bike lane on Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī, crashed after a vehicle passenger opened their door into the bike lane.
 
The 66-year-old male was taken to an area hospital in serious condition. According to the Vehicular Homicide Section of HPD, on May 17, 2024, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
