Following the success of the King Street bus lane through downtown, which has improved bus travel times by 20-30%, The City and County of Honolulu is nearing completion of a “red carpet” travel lane on Kūhiō Avenue from Kapahulu Ave to Olohana St for a safer, quicker, more reliable experiences for all who ride transit.
BENEFITS OF BUS LANES:
- Support our island economy by providing Waikīkī workers
with efficient and reliable transit service; - Reduce the impact of visitors on traffic congestion and
aging infrastructure; - Support local businesses by attracting foot traffic and
delivering customers right to their door; - Reward locals and visitors who make the responsible
choice to travel by transit; - Make streets safer for everyone: people walking, biking,
riding the bus/trolley, and driving - Less costly and quicker to construct than other
high-capacity transit alternatives
HOW WILL IT WORK?
- Each right-hand curb-side lane along Kūhiō Avenue will be
reserved only for City and private buses, trolleys, bicycles, and
vehicles turning into driveways and side streets. - Commercial and passenger loading will be restricted.
- New signs and red pavement markings will be installed to
communicate transit priority.
