On Sunday, December 15th 2024, HBL and the community came together to celebrate the opening of the Leeward Bikeway. This 3.5 mile path connects through the West Loch Community Shoreline Park and extends the Pearl Harbor Historic Trail to create an 11 mile route from ʻAiea Bay State Recreation Area to the Hawaiian Railway Society in ‘Ewa Beach.
About 60 people joined the event and group ride. We gathered at the path near Asing Community Park and celebrated under the HBL archway. After some acknowledgements, a short history lesson, and excitement for next steps, we went for a group ride to see the path first hand.
Just earlier that week, the City’s Department of Parks & Recreation repaved a section of the West Loch Community Shoreline Path, which was much overdue and a great surprise. The rest of the West Loch path is scheduled to be repaved as well. There’s still one narrow bridge that is in need of replacement, but the fresh pavement is a nice improvement!
The project included replacing two bridges, which were impressive improvements!
There are also 8 historical plaques along the route talking about this history of the railway, nearby fishponds, and more.
A small dedication ceremony was held in late November. To learn more about that event, click here.

Hawai’i Bicycling League looks forward to continuing to work with the City & County as well as the Hawai’i Dept of Transportation to expand and improve this corridor to connect more communities from Nānākuli to Mānoa as part of the South Shore Path project.
