Hale‘iwa Metric Century (HMC) Training Plan

The following schedule will focus on the route for the Hale‘iwa Metric Century (HMC)– it will start at 7:30am on Sundays.  The details of each ride will be updated on Fridays. This training group will add 5+ miles each week, building to 55 miles on 4/13. 

April 27 – Hale‘iwa Metric Century (100 km or ride your distance – 30, 50, 80km)

2025 Metric Century Training Key Points:


Pre-Ride Bike Preparation (Required)
o Make sure bike is in good working order. A,B,C (Air-tires inflated, Brakes work, Chain & Derailleurs in working order)
o Working lights front and rear, tire inflator, and 1 spare tube minimum
o Water bottle(s) full
o Cycling Helmet
o Rear view mirror
o Snacks commensurate with ride length
o No headphones, music or other distraction

Roles & Responsibility (Leader, Pin, Sweep, Riders)
o Leader – knows route specifics and leads entire ride unless otherwise noted.
o Pins – appointed by Ride Leader. Stops at all turns to direct riders & helps with rider count.
o Sweep – Remains at rear of ride, signals when stops needed, helps riders with flats, etc.
o Riders – Arrive by 0700, gather at 0715, and depart at 0730. Must ride single file, call out when passing on the left (no passing on right), and call out/signals obstacles, turns, stops, approaching vehicles, and other hazards.

Safety (All)
o Obey all traffic laws
o Watch for parked cars (don’t get doored)
o Stop at all red lights & stop signs
o Hand signal or vocalize intentions; turns, stops, and re-start (“rolling”)
o Maintain safe distance with other bikes (front and back tires), no overlapping tires

Shared Values (Ride Aloha)
o Treat fellow riders with respect & compassion
o This is a no drop ride, NOT a race
o HAVE FUN! Make friends, engage with fellow riders.
o These training rides are brought you by Hawai‘i Bicycling League and dedicated volunteers. Please become a member or donate to help support advocacy and education efforts.

Hale‘iwa Metric Century (HMC) 2025 Training Schedule:

Arrive: 7:00am

Circle up: 7:15am

Ride out: 7:30am

All HMC 2025 training rides (listed below) and will roll out promptly at 7:30am.

START Location:

Geiger Park in Ewa Beach (91-1129 Kahiuka Street)

30 Miles: ‘Ewa & Kapolei

ROUTE: Ride the 30 flat miles throughout ‘Ewa and Kapolei in this kick off ride.

START Location:

Makaha Beach Park (84-369 Farrington Hwy, Waianae, HI 96792)

35 Miles: Mākaha & The west side

ROUTE: 35 miles through Mākaha-Yokohama Beach-Makaha Valley-Yokohama Beach-Wai‘anae HS & return. This is a flat ride with exception of the Mākaha Valley hill climb.

Kāhala Community Park (4495 Pāhoa Ave)

40 Miles: Town & Waimānalo

ROUTE: 40 miles through Kahala-Hawaii Kai-Waimanalo back roads & return. This ride has 4 hill climbs.

START Location:

Kāhala Community Park (4495 Pāhoa Ave)

45 Miles: Town & Waimānalo & BEllows

ROUTE: Building off the previous week, this 45 mile ride through Kāhala-Hawaii Kai-Waimanalo-Bellows-Waimanalo back roads-Kahala Comm. Park & return bring 6 hill climbs to test your fitness.

START Location:

Kaiaka Bay Beach Park (66-449 Haleiwa Rd)

50 Miles: Hale‘iwa & Kahuku

ROUTE: This 50 mile ride through Kaiaka-Ka‘ena Point-3 Tables Beach-Kahuku & return will give you a good idea on if you’re ready for the Hale‘iwa Metric Century.

START Location:

Kaiaka Bay Beach Park (66-449 Haleiwa Rd)

55 Miles: Hale‘iwa & Hukilau Beach

ROUTE: 55 miles on O‘ahu’s North Shore taking you through Kaiaka-Pineapple Hill-Ka‘ena Point-3 Tables Beach & return. This course is generally flat with the exception of Pineapple Hill climb.
