In the past month, there have been growing calls for better e-bike education, awareness and regulation. The Honolulu Star Advertiser published an editorial on September 16th highlighting the growing use of e-bikes and the need for education and safety regulations

At Honolulu Hale, the City Council has been considering several measures to better regulate e-bicycles, including Bill 52 and Resolution 24-199. At the most recent City Council Transportation Committee meeting, DTS Director Roger Morton announced Mayor Blangiardi authorized a new working group involving city and state agencies, as well as the Hawai‘i Bicycling League to inform lawmakers about best practices for regulating e-bikes and micro mobility devices. HBL will bring national cycling expertise and best practices data to these discussions and the working group will make comprehensive recommendations to the Council and Legislature as they update statutes and rules in this space.

HBL has been leading a series of free to attend e-bike workshops, offering on-bike instruction as well as producing a public service announcement video campaign. You can learn more about HBL e-bike resources, information and workshops here.
