May is National Bike Month!

Celebrate Bike Month with HBL & Friends

Grab your bike and join us for a ride, a pau hana, or a volunteer opportunity. We have a month full of events to encourage you to get out and explore via bike. Join us for one event or join us for all of them. We hope to see you out there!

Bike Month 2026 Events:

CYCLING WORKSHOPS in Bike MONTH

Better your biking experience and celebrate National Bike Month with an engaging, informative, and transformative cycling workshop with HBL! We’re offering an array of different hands-on and on-bike learning opportunities all across O‘ahu. Each class has something different to learn and range from free to $30 for a session.

5/02 (Sat) Charity Walk​

Hawai‘i Bicycling League will be participating in the annual Charity Walk, organized by HLTA, on May 2nd. This event will help support our Education programs. While not a biking event, we are encouraging our supporters to walk, donate, and fundraise through our organization. Wear your favorite HBL shirt or jersey at the walk to show support for our cause.

5/03 (Sun) Nation Ride A Bike Day

10:30am – 2:00pm

@ Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room – Kapolei

Join HBL for a bike ride out in Kapolei. We will be meeting at Village Bottle Shop & Tasting Room where we will be starting and finishing our ride. We have a 21 mile route planned with the option to pull off early at 8.5 miles. Or plan your own route and join us for lunch at Village afterwards*. We will be having lunch and talking story at Village from roughly 12pm – 2pm.

* As a bonus New Belgium Brewing and Village has partnered with HBL for National Bike Month and will be donating a dollar for every Ride Aloha Lager draft or can of Fat Tire bought at either Village location all month long. New Belgium also has a bike for raffel with all proceeds going to HBL.

5/05 (Tues) Bike to Lunch

12:00pm – 2:00pm

Plan to grab takeout (or bring your own lunch) and meet at SALT at the tables inside the Barn. Lots of great restaurants nearby, so grab your favorite or try something new!

5/09 (SAT) Bikes on Rice

4:30pm – 6:15pm

The Bikes on Rice rides are safe, slow paced fun rides throughout the surrounding neighborhoods designed for all ages and abilities. Bring any kine bike! The rides last about an hour so bring your own water. We recommend helmets for grown-ups, but please note: state law requires helmets for kids under 16 & so do we.

We have experienced Bikes on Rice squad members throughout the ride for anyone needing assistance.

We appreciate our riders and look forward to happy and safe riding in and around Lihue with all of you.

5/10 (Sun) Mokulē‘ia Time Trial

6:00am – 9:00am

The Mokulēʻia Time Trial is a 12 mile out and back course on the beautiful North Shore coast. The course starts at Waialua High School and proceeds out and back along Farrington Highway towards Ka‘ena Point, turning around at Camp Erdman.

Race Day Schedule:
6:00am – Bib Tent Opens for Pick Up
6:45am – Racer Meeting
7:00am – Race starts with riders heading out in 30 second intervals

Once results are posted, racers have 15 minutes to contest any results, and then the Award Ceremony.

5/10 (Sun) Waialua Fun Ride

9:00am-12:00pm

On the heels of the Mokulē‘ia Time Trial we will be hosting a Waialua Fun Ride. With 2 miles of dedicated bike lanes connected to the Waialua District Park we’re encouraging families to come out and ride with their keiki while enjoying music, helmet and light giveaways, and snacks for everyone to RSVP.

To cap off National Bike to Work Week we will be hosting a full-day bicycle celebration feating a Cycle Swap Meet, helmet giveaway, free bike workshop, and pau hana with beer specials that support Hawaiʻi Bicycling League. Come spend the afternoon with us, find a deal, talk story, or have a pint of our Ride Aloha Pilsner (New Belgium will be donating a dollar for ever pint sold at Village throughout the month of March).

5/23 (SAT) Costco Gran Fondo

What started as a joke, is now a reality. Fueled by dreams and the Costco food courts. Get that dog in ya or an iced coffee or slice of pizza.

Total ride is 76 miles with 1,727 feet of climbing. See the schedule below or click the button to the right to see a map of the route:

  • Start/Finish in Hawai’i Kai.
    • 32 mile ride to start, first stop at Kapolei Costco.
      • Or you could also meet here at 9:30am if they want to ride back from the Hawai’i Kai Costco on they own.
    • 13 miles to Waipio Costco, with biggest hill.
    • 15 miles to Iwilei Costco
    • 15 miles to Hawai’i Kai, with dip through Waikiki / around Diamond Head.

5/23 (SAT) Ride of Silence

This is an important event to raise the awareness of deaths and serious injuries to cyclist worldwide. Please consider squeezing this event into your schedule, this is one that none of us should miss.

Meet at 9:00 am for organization and to hear a short presentation on the Ride of Silence, roll out at 9:30 am. Hawaii County Police will escort cyclists along the two mile course: Kona Community Aquatic Center to Alii Drive to Hualali to Kuakini Highway back to the Aquatic Center.

5/24 (SUN) Pedal to the Meadow

Pedal to the Meadow is the USACycling-sanctioned bicycle hill climb race, from Kekaha to Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke`e, on the island of Kaua`i. Put on by Bicycle Racing Kauaʻi, this is a great race with amazing views and a great community that comes out for it. There is a post race picnic and awards ceremony at the top in Kanaloahuluhulu Meadow in Koke`e State Park.

5/31 (Sun) Bike to the Train

On Sunday, May 31st, bike with us to the Hawaiian Railway Society!  Hop on the historic train and relax all the way to Kahe Point and back. When we return to the train yard, chow down on pizza and hydrate while talking story and learning about the Leeward Bikeway. Ticket includes train ride and lunch. The bike ride is FREE! Ticket required to ride the train and enjoy lunch. 

If you want a shorter bike ride, we encourage to ride Skyline to and/or from the Railway!
