A new Bicycle and Pedestrian bridge over Ala Moana was officially opened to the public on May 22, 2025. At the dedication ceremony, Hawai‘i Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen publicly recognized Travis Counsell and Hawai‘i Bicycling League “for advocacy efforts to include people who ride bicycles in major transportation infrastructure projects, like this.”

The grade-separated crossing spans six lanes of traffic and provides a safer connection between the vibrant Kaka‘ako community and the natural attractions of Ala Moana Beach Park and Kewalo Basin.

“Our partners in this project have done a fantastic job of building a walkway that will not only serve as a pedestrian and bike safety measure but as an aesthetic addition to the corridor,” Sniffen said.

“HBL has been an advocate to encourage HDOT and County Governments apply for funds such as the Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) transportation discretionary grant program which funded this $17.8 million bridge at an 80-20 cost share with the Federal Government,” Counsell added.

“On Maui, we are monitoring the contracting for a $15.43 million award that is to support the first phase of the West Maui Greenway, a multi-use transportation alternative to Honoapi‘ilani Highway. This award announced in January was through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program. Across the country, many of these newer awards have been paused as US DOT reprioritizes projects,” Counsell concluded.
