On Sunday, September 14, 2025 a group of riders training for the Honolulu Century Ride crashed near 41-1511 Kalaniana‘ole Hwy. A rider hit the white curbs that are parallel to the road and placed nearly in the middle of the shoulder lane. The following rider then crashed into the rider who had fallen.

Thankfully, everyone is OK, if banged up – no broken bones or major injuries, though one person did have a concussion, stitches and a cracked molar. The other rider had some road rash and dinged up bike, according to another member’s report.

      • After learning about this incident, we urged members to report the hazard to complainthighwayoahu@Hawai‘i.gov since this is a state roadway. If it had been a city roadway, reporting would best be accomplished by using the Honolulu 311 App.

Executive Director Travis Counsel also sent an e-mail inquiry/alert to key staff at the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation. He noted that while the curbs may have been installed to provide a small buffer between cars and people walking, they are very hazardous for people riding bicycles. “If they were either removed or installed in-line with the white line, that would be preferred.”

We will keep HBL members and supporters apprised with HDOT’s reply. Mahalo to those who reached out and speedy recovery wishes for anyone who was injured. HBL appreciates getting roadway condition reports and your help in flagging hazards so that we can alert authorities and strive to prevent future crashes or injuries on Hawai‘i roadways.
