On Saturday, April 14, Hawaiʻi Bicycling League rolled out with KVIBE for the 2025 Ahupuaʻa Ride.
Put on by Kōkua Kalihi Valleyʻs KVIBE youth program, this annual community ride descends the length of the Kalihi Ahupuaʻa from mauka to makai.
KVIBE interns and community partners share the history of Kalihi and their own stories at six stops along the way, making for an educational and uplifting day of biking, community, and aloha.
The ride starts at the Ho’oulu ‘Āina nature preserve in the back of Kalihi Valley.
Riders hear from interns of the KVIBE youth program outside of the KVIBE building.
Artists put the finishing touches on KVIBE’s new mural featuring Joseph Kahahawai Jr. at the KVIBE stop.
KVIBE intern share poems, stories, and reflections about their lives at story stops along the ride. Pictured here, a stop at Maluhia Cemetery.
Riders take a lap around the Lo’i Kalo Park.
The ride culminates in a celebration at shoreline on Mauliola (Sand Island), where KKV’s other youth programs and Mauliola Keʻehi welcome riders.
At KVIBE, bicycles are known as urban waʻa, the ‘ōlelo Hawai‘i term for canoe.
