Imagine navigating Oʻahu without getting behind the wheel. For many residents, this isn’t a challenge—it’s daily life. Nearly one in four Oʻahu households includes someone who doesn’t drive due to age, ability, or financial reasons. Yet, our transportation system often prioritizes drivers, leaving non-drivers with limited, inconvenient, or unsafe options.

Week Without Driving is an opportunity for elected officials, agency staff, and community leaders to experience this firsthand. From September 30 – October 5, 2025, participants commit to getting around without driving themselves, relying instead on walking, biking, transit, and other available options—just as thousands of residents do every day.

Join the movement, spread the word, and let’s build a more inclusive transportation system together. Who do you want to see take the challenge? 🚶‍♀️🚌🚲

 INFO:

Week Without Driving is a challenge that invites participants to go one full week without driving themselves anywhere. The goal is to understand the barriers faced by people who can’t or don’t drive due to age, ability, income, or personal choice. It’s not about giving up your car forever—just about experiencing daily life from a different perspective and reflecting on how we can build a more inclusive transportation system.

Who Can Participate?

Anyone! Whether you’re a policymaker, planner, community member, student, or parent, we welcome your participation. If you already don’t drive, this is a great opportunity to share your experience. If you normally rely on a car, we encourage you to try walking, biking, public transit, or carpooling—and to note what works and what doesn’t.

OahuMPO will be coordinating this effort for Hawai‘i, organizing participants, planning get togethers, and giving out prizes for participants. Contact Senior Community Planner, Samantha Lara (Samantha.lara@oahumpo.org), for more information.

“Imagine what our transportation would look like if it were planned first around pedestrians and non-vehicular traffic, and vehicles second. We'd be healthier, more social, errands would be more convenient, and we'd have less landscapes of parking lots and air pollution!”
