We are excited to announce we have been awarded a grant from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation – and are looking for dedicated individuals to fulfill these educational job openings. These can be part-time jobs or can be combined to create a full-time position for the appropriate person.
HBL Walk Bike Drive Program Manager
Hawai‘i Bicycling League is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been serving the state of Hawai‘i for 50 years. Our mission is to enable more people to ride bicycles for health, recreation, and transportation through advocacy, education, and events. HBL was recently awarded a grant through the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation to expand our educational programs by conducting presentations on safe driving, walking, and biking practices and are looking to bring on board a qualified individual to be HBL’s Walk Bike Drive Program Manager to fulfill the deliverables of the grant which runs until September 30, 2025.
Position: Manage and implement Hawai‘i Department of Transportation grant project for Hawai‘i Bicycling League (HBL) under direction of Director of Adult Education Malia Harunaga.
This position is being offered, starting in the Spring of 2025 and ending September 30, 2025, with the possibility for extension. This program is funded through a grant from the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation.
The Walk Bike Drive Program Manager will deliver a total of 20 presentations educating residents and visitors on safe walking, biking, and driving practices to help bridge understanding of our shared responsibility to keep our roadway ‘ohana safe. Tasks include:
• Maintain and produce a sustainable curriculum, complete with teaching manuals and resources
• Tailor curriculum content to specific organizations based on organization’s background/industry, protocols, and current training
• Prepare/maintain electronic resources to deliver presentations (slideshows, computer, projector)
• Work with businesses, community groups, non-profits, schools, college campuses, and the general community to schedule Walk Bike Drive presentations and develop partnerships among driver-based businesses and organizations
• Develop marketing materials, advertisements, marketing campaigns, email marketing strategies, and other collateral to attract attendees to presentations and to continue relationships
• Create impactful/educational messaging through social media posts to increase awareness around Vulnerable Road User safety
• Work with partners to promote and advertise program
• Develop, grade, and record results of post-education assessment tests
• Collect data and summarize for project reports
• Work with HBL’s Director of Adult Education and prepare quarterly reports and reimbursement requests including a final report
• As primary presenter for Walk Bike Drive talks, the Program Manager will present the Walk Bike Drive Program to groups, businesses, and organizations (length of program depends on needs of organization); distribute materials to Walk Bike Drive participants; prepare technology and handouts as needed
Required Qualifications:
1. Substantial project management, problem solving, team building and evaluation skills.
2. Ability to manage and achieve goals on a predetermined schedule and within a predetermined time frame.
3. Ability to create and engage in social media to publicize program and increase awareness.
4. Strong written, verbal and visual communication skills.
5. Ability to work with and reach out to organizations, companies, and interested partners.
6. Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
7. Know and understand rules of the road for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, as taught by the League of American Bicyclists under its League Cycling Instructor program.
Desired Qualifications:
1. Certification as a League Cycling Instructor by the League of American Bicyclists.
2. Undergraduate college degree with some experience in organizing and community outreach.

HBL was recently awarded a grant through the Hawai‘i Department of Transportation to expand our bike education opportunities on the island of Maui and are looking to bring on board an enthusiastic individual to be HBL’s Maui Bike Education Coordinator to fulfill the deliverables of the grant which runs until September 30, 2025.
Position: Manage and implement Hawai‘i Department of Transportation grant project for Hawai‘i Bicycling League (HBL) by coordinating and delivering on-bike and hands-on cycling classes on Maui under direction of Director of Adult Education Malia Harunaga.
The HBL Maui Bike Education Coordinator will deliver a campaign of Maui-based bike classes educating residents and visitors on safe cycling practices and basic bike maintenance. Tasks include:
• Community outreach to schedule classes over the grant period (6 total classes)
• Develop email marketing strategies and other collateral to attract attendees to workshops
• Community outreach through marketing, press releases, and social media to attract students for courses
• Work with partners to promote and advertise program
• Prepare workshop handouts and coordinate class materials for each class as needed
• Management of contract instructors and volunteers to help teach hands-on and on-bike classes for adults
• Collect sign-in information from workshop participants and interested parties
• Work with HBL’s Director of Adult Education and prepare quarterly reports and reimbursement requests including a final report
Required Qualifications:
1. Substantial project management, problem solving, team building and evaluation skills.

7. Ability to work flexible hours including prior to and during education and training events which may occur on weekends.
8. Know and understand rules of the road for pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists, as taught by the League of American Bicyclists under its League Cycling Instructor program.
9. Personal experience with road conditions and danger areas as a pedestrian and cyclist on Maui.
10. Have basic bicycle mechanic skills.
