Hawai‘i Bicycling League led a Ride of Silence event in Honolulu on the evening of May 21st. Dozens of riders, volunteers and HPD officers joined us to remember and honor those who were killed while riding their bicycles on public roads. This somber event is observed in more than 400 cities worldwide during National Bicycle Month.
On the Neighbor Islands, folks gathered on Saturday May 24th. Maui Bicycling League, an official HBL Chapter organization, led a Ride of Silence with representatives from MPD, the County Council and MDOT. The late Volker Weiss’s daughter, Marina Riker, gave moving remarks during the opening ceremony.
On Hawai‘i Island, members of the racing club Hawai‘i Cycling, held a special tribute for their race director Franz Weber. He was the lead organizer for many cycling events there including this annual commemoration.
These rides raise awareness about the need for motorists to share the road and underscore our communities’ commitments to making Hawai‘i a safer place to bike.
As of May 2025, 53 people have died on Hawaiʻi’s roads — a 51% increase from the same time last year. No one deserves to die because they chose to ride a bicycle and we will work relentlessly to advocate for safer streets for all.
