BICYCLING BASICS (on-bike workshop) from 0900 – 1100

Learn how to ride with confidence & control on the open road! 

Feeling a bit frightened to bike on the streets of Hawai‘i? HBL is here to help you with that! Bring your bicycle and come out to HBL’s free hands-on, on-bike 2-hr workshop that will have you feeling at ease pedaling wherever your ride takes you. Learn what your rights are as a cyclist & why exercising them is key to having a comfortable & enjoyable bike ride, better your bike control, learn how to perform an easy safety check on your bike, and lots more!

We at HBL really believe biking should be fun(!), NOT stressful, so join us for this super helpful, very informative, and possibly life-changing workshop that will make your biking experience a joyous one forever-forward.

This workshop includes:

  • Proper helmet fitting & check.
  • Basic bike fitting & how to perform a safety check of your equipment.
  • Best practices of cycling safely in Hawai‘i.
  • Bike parking: what you need to know.
  • Types of bicycle infrastructure you may encounter in the area & how to use them.
  • Where you can ride, where you cannot, and where you should ride for an enjoyable biking experience.
  • On-bike handling practice for smooth starting, stopping, steering, scanning, and signaling.
  • Short instructor-led ride around the neighborhood (less than 2 miles) to show you how to apply those best practices, and have you experience in real life!

 

FIX-A-FLAT (hands-on workshop) from 1200 – 1330

Learn how to fix a flat on your own bike with ease!

A hands-on 90min. introductory course to teach you how to fix your own flat with ease, lubricate your bike chain, and keep your bike in tip-top shape for an enjoyable ride. Your knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful instructors will make sure that you come out of this workshop knowing the most important bike maintenance skills so that you can continue to ride safely, for many miles to come!

This workshop includes:

  • How to change a flat on your bicycle.
  • What items you should be carrying with you on every ride.
  • Handy flat prevention tips & tricks.
  • Hands-on experience for you to take your wheel off your bicycle & change the tube out, with HBL’s knowledgeable cycling instructors there when you need them to help answer any questions you might have.

 

ROAD CYCLING SKILLS (on-bike workshop) from 1400 – 1630

Level up your pedaling prowess & get the most out of your bike & gear.

This 2.5-hr workshop equips any adult rider with the knowledge, skills, and “insider cycling scoops” to tackle any road situation! Want to get better at tackling hills? You’ll learn efficient shifting & braking techniques here! New to group riding? Our expert League Cycling Instructors will cover the essential do’s and dont’s for safe group riding (and will help you look like a seasoned cyclist at your first group ride!). You’ll get to master bike control by performing advanced avoidance maneuvers to keep the “rubber side down” before wrapping up with an instructor-led group ride around the neighborhood.

This workshop covers:

  • Your rights & responsibilities for riding on the road in Hawai‘i.
  • Gear & equipment: The essentials, night-riding, and tips on riding in inclement weather.
  • Effective shifting techniques.
  • Group riding etiquette: do’s and dont’s.
  • Types of hazards & how to avoid crashes.
  • Advanced on-bike hazard avoidance maneuvers.
  • Instructor-led group ride around the neighborhood to take our skills to the streets.
