On June 4th, Hawaiʻi Bicycling League joined Kalihi Valley Instructional Bike Exchange (KVIBE) on Maui as they put on a bicycle workshop and giveaway for students from Maui Economic Opportunity (MEO) Youth Services and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Maui.

Over the course of two days, KVIBE’s skillful youth instructors held workshops on bike maintenance, safety, and independence for their Maui peers. As part of this event, the Maui students received new Specialized mountain bikes! Plus helmets, bike repair kits, and saddle bags (donated by HBL) to go with their new bikes and skills.

The event culminated in an empowering community bike ride where students got to take their new bikes both on- and off-road.

The workshop and ride was a major success! We even heard from BBBS Maui that the day after the workshop some of the Maui youth were able to fix flat tires on their neighborhood friends’ bikes.

In addition to KVIBE and our Maui hosts, HBL would like to thank Ulupono Initiative, Hawaiʻi Public Health Institute (HiPHI), and Krank Cycles for making this event possible.
