LARge eVENT Volunteer DESCRIPTIONS

Current Volunteer Opportunities:

2024 Honolulu Century Ride

Sunday, September 29th

HBL’s signature rides – the Haleʻiwa Metric Century and Honolulu Century Ride – are also major volunteer events! Volunteer shifts start four days before each big ride, so even registered riders can help pitch-in and make the event a success. Below are descriptions of each position to help you determine what job suits you best.

*HEAVY* = Heavy lifting involved. Volunteers should be able to lift 40lbs.

HBL Staff will provide instructions on how to process late registrations.

Packet Pick up Teams/ Tables

Location: Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse

  • ● Bike Valet: Valet and watch over the bikes for people who will be stopping by to pick up their packets. HBL will provide tents and chairs for you to use. Bike valet volunteers should be able to lift a bike (about 20lbs) and place it on the bike rack. For heavier bikes and e-bikes we recommend parking them free-standing or leaned against a secure structure instead of lifting and hanging them on the bike rack.

  • ● Greeters: Greeters will be greeting the riders at the entryway with a master list of the riders, post-it notes, and pens. When you greet a rider, please ask for their name. Make sure the rider pronounces their name CLEARLY. If you’re still unsure, ask for their last name. We have many riders with VERY similar names, so please double check to prevent any confusion. Once you confirm their name, refer to the master sheet and write their rider number on a sticky note to give to them. Direct them to the appropriate number station. Make sure to smile! ◡̈

  • ● Packet Givers: Once the rider has been directed to a number station, packet givers will provide them with 2 things: a generic packet + number set (includes bib # + bike plate). If the rider opted for an event t-shirt or jersey, their sizes will be on the back of their number set. If so, please direct them to the t-shirt/ jersey table.

  • ● T-shirt/ Jersey Givers: If a rider has been directed to you, please check on the back of their number set (bib # + bike plate) for their sizes. BE sure to double check your work. Once that’s done, send them over the merch table to check out HBL items.

  • ● Help Desk & Late Registration Help people register for the event if they have not already signed up and troubleshoot any issues. HBL Staff will provide training on how to use the event registration site prior to your shift.

  • ● Merchandise Sales: Bring out your inner sales person and help sell HBL merchandise. You’ll be using HBL’s payment processor, Square, to accept payments. Prior knowledge of a Square and HBL Merch is a plus, but HBL Staff can also provide training.

Pizza Delivery (volunteer provides car )

An HBL staff member will contact you for the pizza order the day prior. You’ll need your driver’s license, Costco card and credit card to purchase the pizzas (HBL will reimburse you).

Ride command (prior experience or training required )

The command center makes sure the event is safe for everyone and rolls out as planned. Here, all lines come together and in case of an emergency or a hazard, the proper measures will be taken. You will support the course marshals, who are working hard to make the ride a pleasure for all participants. They will have many different things going on at the same time, so please be accurate, quick, and to the point when speaking to a course marshal (avoid small talk!). General understanding of O‘ahu (specifically HMC & HCR routes) is a plus. If you’re up for the challenge, please contact HBL ( bicycle@HBL.org ) ASAP to schedule a training session.
