Hawaii Bicycling League (HBL)

Hawaii Bicycling League is a 501(c)3 nonprofit whose mission is to enable more people to ride bicycles for health, recreation, and transportation through advocacy, education, and events. BikeEd is a very important HBL program. Each year, HBL’s BikeEd Program teaches bike safety to 8,000 O’ahu 4th-grade students.

Job Summary

Over a full week at schools scheduled across O’ahu, BikeEd instructors teach 4th grade students, within their school day.  Instruction includes presentations, demonstrations, and on-the-bike drills on campus.  Students who are ready and willing also bike on safe neighborhood streets under the leadership and supervision of the BikeEd team.  The BikeEd Team is comprised of 2-3 instructors, including a BikeEd Team Leader.

HBL is looking for both Full-Time (Monday through Friday) and Part-Time (Thursday and Friday) BikeEd Instructors to start August 2 for the coming school year*. Hours are typically 7:30am-2pm, including travel time, with work days aligning with school days and holidays.  *Often, BikeEd Team Members take summer breaks off and return for the next school year. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Instructs students in the complete on-bike and on-road HBL BikeEd Program curriculum.
  • Temporarily assumes responsibilities for Team Leader/Instructor in their absence when needed.
  • Teaches bicycle safety to other youth and community members as requested by the BikeEd Manager
  • Safeguards all BikeEd equipment and materials on a consistent basis.
  • Cleans bicycles and other equipment in compliance with Covid protocols. Assumes other virus mitigation practices as instructed.
  • Assists with weekly bike repairs and bike maintenance to ensure they are clean, safe, and mechanically sound
  • Assists team leader as required with site surveys, distribution of materials, etc.
  • Helps with loading and unloading of bikes and equipment from BikeEd vehicles.
  • Drives the BikeEd vehicle when required.
  • Attend BikeEd Team meetings, HBL staff meetings, and HBL Board meetings, functions, and events when requested and when time allows.

  • Interest in working with children ages 8-10 to build their confidence and biking skill.
  • Ability to be engaging, enthusiastic and supportive.
  • The ability to work well within a team environment and under the direction of a BikeEd Team Leader. 
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable as situations change.
  • Able to look online for weekly/daily schedules and always arrive on time.
  • Experience and understanding of basic cycling skills (safe and proper ways to operate a bicycle and basic bicycle maintenance).



  • Must be able to lift 60 pounds. 
  • Must be able to stand/walk/bike for several hours. 
  • Has physical stamina and focus to keep kids safe.
  • Dependable and reliable
  • Possesses a valid Driver’s license and has a clean driving abstract
  • Must pass a background check.
