Ride in Hawai‘i’s largest cycling event and HBL’s biggest fundraiser!

The 40th Anniversary Honolulu Century Ride is going to be the best day of the year to ride your bike! Supported with aid stations, mechanical help, and HPD presence along the course for added safety.

Enjoy O‘ahu’s magical views with old and new friends while riding for a cause.

All funds raised support Hawaii Bicycling League’s advocacy and education work to get more people bicycling and make Hawai‘i’s roads safer for everyone, whether driving, riding or walking. That’s why we say it’s the best day of the year to ride in paradise, because we ride for a cause.

The Honolulu Century Ride is an untimed ride in which riders roll at their own pace. There are no official finishing places or times, a style called Audax in Europe. This gives riders new to Hawai‘i plenty of freedom to enjoy the sights along the way. The front pack in the ride, however, has some great cyclists riding at near-professional pace. Due to limited road and turn around options, the longest course is around 96 miles long.

Looking to tackle your personal riding goal or complete first century ride? Awesome! The Honolulu Century Ride is the best day to do that as you’ll be supported with snacks, encouragement, and all your fellow riders to help you achieve your distance goal.

Check out HBL’s Calendar online at HBL.org/calendar. You’ll find all the group rides around the island that you join up with to build your mileage with so you’re prepared and feeling good on the big day!

The Red Hot Ladies have put together a specific training plan to help novice to intermediate riders get comfortable on their bikes and conquer their first Century Ride. Look for their “Roving Rides” every Sunday morning (meet up at 7:30am). Starting on July 10 they’ll be gradually increasing their mileage by adding 5 more miles each week–the perfect training plan if you’re looking to do the Honolulu Century Ride!

More info click here or email Patricia if you have questions or want to join her mailing list for weekly rides.

Riders in the Honolulu Century Ride start in groups with similar riding styles and abilities. This allows all riders to enjoy the ride safely. In both rides, Group A begins first, followed by Groups B, & C. There are pauses between each group to allow groups to spread out on the course. Flags will be stationed at the start. Please stage behind these areas. Announcements will be made when to start.

Group A: Lua‘ole – If your distance per month is over 300 miles (482 km), average more than 19 MPH (30 km/h), and you are used to riding in a group.

Lua‘ole (pronounced “loo-ah oh-leh”) is a Hawaiian word that translates to superior, unequalled, and second to none.

Group B: ‘Eleu – If you cover more than 125 miles (201 km) per month, average more than 13mph (20 km/h), and have experience participating in long rides.

The word ‘eleu (pronounced “eh-leh-ooh”) translates to active, energetic, alert, lively, quick, and nimble.

Group C: HoloholoIf you average 6-7 MPH (14 – 17 km/h) and your goal is to ride slowly while enjoying the scenery.

Holoholo literally translates to a stroll or to go out for pleasure. The use of the word is used casually in everyday conversation and is synonymous with the slang word, “cruising.”

The distance you choose to ride should be realistic and based on your level of health, training, and conditioning. Remember, Hawai‘i’s warm temperatures and sun can make for a more difficult ride. As your body fatigues, the ride back feels longer than the ride out – use good judgment in assessing your ability.

You should finish the ride feeling good, perhaps a bit sore for the effort, but without pain or being severely depleted.

Project M will be the official photographers on course and taking your finisher photos. Pictures will be available for purchase after the event (a link will be emailed to registered riders). The link to see, search, and download them will be here: Project M

Ride with Aloha: Please follow all traffic laws, signs, and signals, plus any requests from the HPD special duty officers on course. Please ride single file (this is law in Hawai‘i) and to the right of the lane. In many situations the shoulder has sand or gravel. Please signal to the riders/drivers behind you when merging into the travel lane. Hawaii HRS291C-145 allows a cyclist to control the whole lane when it’s too narrow for a car and a bike to share the lane as well as to avoid hazards. For more info on the laws, please visit our Bike Laws page. Please report aggressive / dangerous drivers to HPD by calling 911.

Pass with Care: When passing a rider, please make sure it is clear to do so, then pass on the left. Be sure to signal visually (for riders and drivers behind) and vocally, “passing on your left” for rider ahead.

Fundraise for HBL to better fund the Bike Ed Program, our workshops & educational classes, and our advocacy efforts. When you register you’ll have the ability to opt into creating a fundraiser page or you can create one by clicking this link! Velohana offers great value with performance road bikes by Chapter 2, Argon 18, Bianchi & more. They also offer a full service suite to help people prepare for the event. Also check out SpinLister for more options.

If you’re not positive that you bike is in top shape, take it to your friendly local bike store for a quick tune-up. At many shops, no appointment is necessary and the tune-up should take a relatively short amount of time. However, it’s polite to call and ask before showing up with your bike. Make Sure Your Bike Fits You – The biggest problem facing most cyclists is bike fit. Nearly all cyclists need some sort of adjustment to their bikes in order to achieve maximum performance. And while you may feel comfortable at first, as your body adapts, your bike may need readjustment. An improperly fit bike can cause an uncomfortable riding experience or even injury. If your knees hurt, chances are you are riding an improperly adjusted bike. Take your bike in to your local bike store to have it professionally fitted.

Bringing your bike to the start line in good working order is really important.  It would be a shame to get there and not be able to ride because your bike isn’t working or is unsafe. Perhaps worse would be experiencing a mechanical issue that causes you to end your ride early. If you’re not positive your bike is in top shape, take it to your friendly local bike store for a quick tune-up.

Mechanical Support: More to come!

Local bike stores and partners BIKEFACTORY, The Bike Shop, Velohana, Boca, Hawaii Triathlon Center, and more will be volunteering their time to provide mechanical support at the designated Aid Stations. In addition, there will be mechanical support roving along the course for riders in need.

All ages are welcome!

Youth is 17 and under with 15 & under needing to be accompanied by an adult.

We welcome those that can’t make it to the 9/24 event –but don’t want to miss out on being a part of this epic event– to register and participate (wherever they are!), in whatever capacity they desire. We do have a virtual option for the first time this year where we will mail all of your goodies to you so you can celebrate your own 40th Anniversary Honolulu Century Ride wherever you may be.

You’ll receive:

  • HCR Bib Number
  • Event Shirt
  • Participation Certificate
  • HCR Sticker

We really appreciate that kind of support from those that maybe have moved off-island or just want a sample of riding in Hawai‘i, as this event is a fundraiser for HBL & the work we do!  Feel free to drop Chris an email if you have any other questions!

Road bikes, mountain bikes, hybrid bikes, cruisers, tandems, pedal-assist e-bikes–all bicycles that can be operated safely can be ridden.  Make sure your bike is in good operating order.

The event is not only a community ride that celebrates cycling as a fun & healthy activity and brings more awareness to bicycling safety, but ultimately is a fundraising event for HBL. Expenses are incurred before the ride takes place. For that reason, no deferrals or refunds will be processed.

Ride registrations are non-refundable and non-transferable. Forfeited Ride registrations are treated as a donation. HBL, in its sole discretion, may delay, modify, or cancel the Ride for any reason, including if it believes the conditions on the ride day are unsafe. In the event the Ride is delayed, modified, or cancelled, including but not limited to acts of the elements (including without limitation, wind, rain, hurricane, tsunami), acts of terrorism, fire, public disaster, flood, course conditions, or any other cause beyond the control of HBL, there shall be no refund of the Ride entry fee or any other costs incurred in connection with the Ride. HBL shall make efforts to reschedule, but makes no guarantee.

As O‘ahu’s oldest and largest cycling organization, Hawaii Bicycling League is working hard to achieve our mission of “enabling more people to bicycle for health, recreation, and transportation through advocacy, education, and events”.

We advocate for bicycle-friendly, safer street changes, including laws to protect people on bikes and other vulnerable road users, more bikeways and Complete Streets, as well as the policies and funding to make Hawaii a bicycle paradise.

We educate bicyclists and motorists on how to safely share our roads and to ensure anyone that wants to bike is empowered to bike. We educate over 8,000 4th graders on Oahu every year, growing the next generation of cyclists.

We host events both big and small to get people bicycling and bring together a community around the love of cycling.

This wouldn’t be possible without the support of our members, riders, contributors, and volunteers.

Mahalo for being part of the Ride Aloha Festival. All funds raised will go toward HBL’s advocacy and education efforts to make Hawai‘i’s streets safer for all. If you want to “go the extra mile”, here is your opportunity.
